TS-280GHistory and Information about the Tenor Saxophone

The tenor saxophone is a mid-range member of the saxophone family. Unlike many instruments, the history of the saxophone is well-known. It was invented in the 1840s by Belgian instrument maker Adolphe Sax. The tenor sax is featured heavily in military band and jazz music, and when you take sax lessons, you will also be able to learn blues, funk, and rock music.

When to Start on the Tenor Saxophone

You can start tenor saxophone lessons as young as age 8. Most students begin on the alto sax and then add or switch to the tenor sax when they get a little older and possess the hand size required of the tenor sax. All members of the saxophone family have the same fingerings, so it is easy to switch back and forth between them.

Getting a Tenor Saxophone

Please call us so we can recommend a store from which you can purchase or rent a tenor saxophone. For very young students, it is recommended to rent instruments for two reasons: 1) they will most likely grow out of instruments quickly and 2) they may lose interest (although we hope they don’t!). However, when you rent a saxophone or buy a used one, it is strongly advised that you buy a new mouthpiece. Most places that rent instruments will also provide repair services for their instruments.
