History and Information about the Accordion
The accordion is a keyboard instrument that is usually handheld, and produces sound using a bellows and free reeds. The accordion as we know it today was invented in the 19th-century in either Russia or Germany, although the documentation is unclear as to where the first accordion was actually made. The accordion has a large range styles, and is used in many genres of music, such as folk, classical, popular, and even some forms of rock and metal.
When to Start on the Accordion
You can start keyboard lessons as young as age 6, depending on hand size and strength. Students also should have begun to read and count, as most instructors will be teaching them how to read music very early on, if not right away.
Getting an Accordion
Please call us so we can recommend a store from which you can purchase or rent an accordion. For very young students, it is recommended to rent instruments for two reasons: 1) they will most likely grow out of instruments quickly and 2) they may lose interest (although we hope they don’t!). We also provide piano repair and tuning services, please ask for this information if you are interested!
Purchasing Books for Your Accordion Lessons
Most books and supplies are available online. Give us a call for local store recommendations. Your instructor can tell you which books are appropriate or needed.
